Built for the rumen
Highly available magnesium
Dual action: Mg²⁺ and 2OH⁻
Low dust, safer to handle
WHAT IS pHix-up

A magnesium oxide engineered for ruminant nutrition.

pHix-up is a unique blend of magnesium oxide sources, formulated using industrial expertise and designed specifically for ruminant nutrition. It’s superior solubility profile combined with it neutralising capacity and low-dust makes it a powerful dual action solution that is effective at its job, whilst also being safer and easier to handle

Magnesium is an essential mineral for dairy cows – Every cow needs it, every day. It is involved in over 300 reacts into the body, supporting milk production, neuromuscular transmission, and the prevention of hypocalcemia. So you want to pick a magnesium that works.

What pHix-up supports

  • Supports milk production
  • Reduces the risk of milk fever
  • Mitigates grass tetany risk
  • Supports healthy nerve-to-muscle communication
  • Stabilises rumen pH
  • Low dust for safer handling

Developed by the international experts in magnesium.

pHix-up® is developed by Terresis and backed by research with Professor Alex Bach. It continues to gain momentum internationally as a superior dual-action magnesium source. Read about Terresis

Grass tetany is what magnesium deficiency looks like in the paddock.

Grass tetany (hypomagnesaemia) is one of the key problems our cows face when they are short of magnesium. It moves fast, and it can be fatal if it is not treated.

Tremors and muscle rigidity
Staggering, lack of coordination
Convulsions
Collapse (the downer cow)
Fatal if untreated
Lush green, fast growing spring grass is when our cows are at most risk from Grass Tetany.

Lush grass is typically low in magnesium but high in both potassium and nitrogen which both interfere with magnesium absorption.

Supplementing magnesium is the answer, but only if it dissolves in the rumen.

Magnesium that does not solubilise in the rumen will either pass straight through her, or dissolve in the hind gut where it changes pH and raises the risk of a salmonella outbreak. Solubility depends on source origin, calcination, particle size and chemical formula.

80–90%

of magnesium absorption needs to happen in the rumen. That makes rumen solubility the whole ball game.

More than 80–90% of magnesium absorption occurs in the rumen. This means that the effectiveness of any magnesium supplement depends first on its ability to dissolve (solubilize) in the rumen fluid. If the Mg source does not solubilize in the rumen, it will simply pass through the digestive tract and be lost. Or worse, solubilize in the hind gut, and cause unwanted pH changes, potentially risking Salmonella outbreak.

The Absorption Challenge

Magnesium that hasn’t dissolved is magnesium that isn’t working.

Different magnesium sources dissolve at different pH levels. New Zealand rumens sit at a higher pH than UK and US rumens, so choosing a source designed to dissolve at a typical NZ rumen pH matters.

Animal health
Low blood magnesium

An increased risk of down cows and grass tetany through the highest-risk weeks of the season.

Return on spend
Magnesium you paid for, lost

Magnesium that hasn’t solubilised in the rumen won’t be utilised in the rumen, where it is needed most.

Downstream risk
Hind gut pH changes

Undissolved magnesium may solubilise further down the tract, shifting pH and raising salmonella risk.

How pHix-up works

Follow the chain, and the answer is a better magnesium.

01
80-90% of magnesium absorption needs to happen in the rumen.
02
To be absorbed, it must first be solubilised (dissolved)
03
To dissolve, it needs its ideal environmental pH (i.e. the rumen fluid)
04
NZ rumens sit at a higher pH than uk/us rumens, so we need a Mg that works in a higher pH.
05
If it doesn't solubilise, she misses out - and it may dissolve later, where you don't want it.

Counteract the Lush Spring Grass & Ensure Magnesium Absorption

To counteract the lush spring grass and ensure cows can absorb as much of the supplemented magnesium as possible in the rumen, Sollus has sourced a world leading magnesium source called pHix-Up.

Made up of several different source of Mg, pHix Up is designed to give a controlled staggered release of Magnesium, both a fast acting and a slow sustained release, at higher levels, than other magnesium sources.

Features and benefits

What it is, and what that means for your herd.

pHix-up® is a high-quality source of magnesium for New Zealand dairy cows, with a set of real advantages over other mag-oxide products.

  • Highly available source of magnesium
  • Made up of several different sources of magnesium
  • Delivers a controlled staggered release of magnesium
  • Quickly activates in the rumen
  • Fast acting & long lasting
  • Stabilises rumen pH

More magnesium for your money

Being a highly available source, cows absorb the magnesium more efficiently and waste less of it.

Lower grass tetany and milk fever risk

Quick activation in the rumen gets magnesium into her blood when the risk is highest.

Less risk further down the tract

High availability increases the amount absorbed in the rumen, reducing hind gut pH changes and the salmonella risk that follows.

Magnesium when and where she needs it

Fast acting and long lasting, so cover holds across the day rather than spiking and dropping away.

Better feed conversion and more milk

A rumen-stabilising effect keeps her rumen bugs happier, improving feed conversion efficiency and milk production.

When and how to feed

Magnesium every day, and more of it when the risk lifts.

Magnesium should be supplemented daily, and increased during periods of higher risk of low blood magnesium. Your rep can help you set the rate for your system.

Pasture is high in nitrates
Pasture is high in potassium, which interferes with magnesium absorption
Pasture is high in rapidly fermentable carbohydrates (sugars)
Pasture is low in effective fibre - fast passage rates leave less time for absorption, so she needs a source that is available faster
Pre-calving, as part of your transition diet, to support PTH activation and calcium bone mobilisation

Getting it into the diet
